Generative AI\u2019s capability to perform human tasks has taken the world by storm. This rise has been so spectacular that its benefits are forecast to add about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/mckinsey-digital\/our-insights\/the-economic-potential-of-generative-ai-the-next-productivity-frontier#key-insights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$2.60-$4.40 trillion annually<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The rise in generative AI is also expected to increase the impact of all AI by 15-40%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"margin: 0 auto; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/widget\/charts\/NVDA?defaultOverlays=EMA20%2CSMA50&amp;periodGrouping=daily&amp;defaultSeries=candlesticks\" width=\"720\" height=\"440\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending on artificial intelligence has skyrocketed over the past year. The International Data Corporation (IDC) expects global spending on AI solutions to reach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS51335823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than $500 billion in 2027<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many tech beneficiaries from this AI boom exist, two stand out: the $2 trillion-dollar semiconductor juggernaut <\/span><b>NVIDIA Corporation (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/stocks\/sp500\/nvda\"><b>NASDAQ:NVDA<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the up-and-coming IT solutions company <\/span><b>Super Micro Computer, Inc. (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/stocks\/nasdaq\/smci\"><b>NASDAQ:SMCI<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two stocks have provided skyrocketing returns for quite some time. While the companies are not in direct contention with each other in terms of market share, they do overlap to some extent and both show considerable promise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"margin: 0 auto; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/widget\/charts\/SMCI?defaultOverlays=EMA20%2CSMA50&amp;periodGrouping=daily&amp;defaultSeries=candlesticks\" width=\"720\" height=\"440\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past year, NVIDIA gained approximately 300%, while Super Micro Computer (also known as Supermicro) soared more than 1,150%. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put this into context, the <\/span><b>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/stocks\/nysearca\/spy\"><b>NYSEARCA:SPY<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which represents the broader market, has<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased by 33.5% over the same time frame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, which stock should be a better buy at this juncture?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>NVIDIA Makes AI Possible<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chip giant NVIDIA became the first mover in the graphics market <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-in\/about-nvidia\/corporate-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when it invented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in 1999. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GPUs are foundational for AI operations, enabling more efficiency and speed. In fact, ChatGPT&#8217;s large language model (LLM) is trained on NVIDIA\u2019s chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company is regarded as a gateway to investing in AI. Including GPUs and networking, NVIDIA powers more than 75% of the global top 500 list supercomputers, supporting more than 3,500 applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company&#8217;s fundamentals improved significantly last year after a lackluster performance in the previous year. Macroeconomic factors impacted the company in fiscal year 2023 (which ended on January 29, 2023).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revenue flatlined in fiscal 2023, with a 27% year-over-decline in the gaming segment as the company reduced its channel inventory levels. In addition, sales in China were impacted by new government restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/ixviewer\/ix.html?doc=\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/0001045810\/000104581022000146\/nvda-20220826.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imposed a new license requirement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the export of its A100 and H100 chips to China. The company also reported that this could result in a loss of $400 million in potential sales. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, NVIDIA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nvidianews.nvidia.com\/news\/nvidia-and-softbank-group-announce-termination-of-nvidias-acquisition-of-arm-limited\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called off its Arm acquisition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in an increment of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/s201.q4cdn.com\/141608511\/files\/doc_financials\/2023\/q4\/4e9abe7b-fdc7-4cd2-8487-dc3a99f30e98.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1.35 billion in acquisition termination charge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to its operating expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But flatlining sales were not an isolated case. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semiconductors.org\/despite-short-term-cyclical-downturn-global-semiconductor-markets-long-term-outlook-is-strong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industry-wide slowdown in chip sales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was observed at the tail end of 2022 due to short-term macroeconomic issues. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang believed that AI was at an \u201cinflection point\u201d in the company\u2019s growth trajectory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This optimism materialized in fiscal 2024, when revenue increased by 126% from the prior year to $60.92 billion, while non-GAAP earnings grew by 286% year over year to $32.31 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although smaller business segments did not exhibit astronomical growth, NVIDIA\u2019s data center revenues (the segment related to its costly AI chips) rose 217% from the prior year to $47.50 billion. The company also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/02\/14\/nvidia-passes-alphabet-market-cap-now-third-most-valuable-us-firm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">briefly topped<\/span><\/a> <b>Apple Inc.\u2019s (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/stocks\/sp500\/aapl\"><b>NASDAQ:AAPL<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> market capitalization last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While NVIDIA\u2019s significant AI prospects and its appeal to consumers and investors alike are apparent, the market is becoming increasingly crowded. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry leaders like <\/span><b>Intel Corporation (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/stocks\/sp500\/intc\"><b>NASDAQ:INTC<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/stocks\/nasdaq\/amd\"><b>NASDAQ:AMD<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are stepping up their AI chip game, while startups like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sambanova.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sambanova<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wow.groq.com\/world-meet-groq-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerebras.net\/product-chip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cerebras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tenstorrent.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenstorrent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also trying to level the playing field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"margin: 0 auto; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/financhill.com\/widget\/charts\/AMD?defaultOverlays=EMA20%2CSMA50&amp;periodGrouping=daily&amp;defaultSeries=candlesticks\" width=\"720\" height=\"440\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Rising Star Is Super Micro Computer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supermicro provides accelerated computing platforms for a variety of markets, including cloud computing, edge computing, data centers, and AI. The Silicon Valley-based company is not directly in competition with NVIDIA, as its GPU server systems in fact depend heavily on NVIDIA chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, SMCI has become a rising star in the IT solutions market, with a deep focus on AI. The company has received a lot of attention from investors. Its IPO was priced at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ir.supermicro.com\/news\/news-details\/2007\/Super-Micro-Computer-Inc-Announces-Pricing-of-Initial-Public-Offering\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$8 per share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but those shares have appreciated about 135x since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its financials are also growing rapidly. As of fiscal year 2023 (ended June 30, 2023), Supermicro\u2019s annual net sales of $7.12 billion were six times what they were ten years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fiscal 2023 also saw its net income jump 124% from the prior year to $640 million, as the company managed to lower its operating expenses as a percentage of revenue by 1.6 percentage points to just 7.3%, underscoring growing efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the rest of the calendar year 2023, which the company deems as the first half of fiscal 2024, its top line grew significantly on the back of continued demand for its AI platforms and rack-scale IT solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaining market share has led the company to raise its fiscal 2024 revenue guidance from a range of $10-$11 billion to $14.30-$14.70 billion. However, these estimates may very well be conservative as indicated by the company&#8217;s history of topping annual sales estimates since fiscal 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aligning with this ambition, last month, a significant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supermicro.com\/en\/pressreleases\/supermicro-drives-advanced-ai-capabilities-edge-computing-environments-new-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upsize in its AI solutions portfolio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was declared. It was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/super-micro-computer-and-deckers-outdoor-set-to-join-sp-500-others-to-join-sp-100-sp-midcap-400-and-sp-smallcap-600-302077677.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">included in the S&amp;P MidCap 400 index<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this month, which resulted in a huge pop in its share price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a more pessimistic note, Goldman Sachs analysts are not very bullish on the stock\u2019s prospects and have initiated coverage with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/03\/04\/super-micro-pops-15percent-after-sp-500-selection.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNeutral\u201d rating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which could be attributed to the stock\u2019s speculative valuation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The skittish rating may be justified given that the forward non-GAAP P\/E ratio is 76.29, which looks very expensive by industry standards. However, because of its high-flying earnings growth, the forward non-GAAP PEG ratio stands at only 1.02.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>NVIDIA vs SMCI Stock: Which Is Best?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>While SMCI has grown rapidly, Nvidia has a much wider moat, larger revenues and is a key supplier to SMCI, making it the better business.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is here to stay. Although the storm will pass eventually, the impact that AI has created over the past few years is expected to remain prominent. Hence, AI-related companies will almost certainly continue to experience rising and sustained demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NVIDIA emerged as a darling of the AI boom, overtaking multiple tech titans in a brilliant run. On the other hand, Supermicro, while not as popular as the chip giant, has enjoyed phenomenal growth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is the chip giant Nvidia has a wider moat and Wall Street analysts are expecting a modest upside in the stock, while Supermicro\u2019s high-flying valuation indicates a correction.
