Several of his relatives had served in local, state, and federal positions. His grandfather was a state legislator in Massachusetts. His mother\u2019s father was the mayor of Boston for two terms and was elected as a U.S. Congressman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Given this background, JFK had plenty of advantages that would lead to his fame. Still, he had to make a name for himself. His dedication to hard work would eventually lead him to the White House, where he served as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/john-f-kennedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35th President of the United States.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>John F Kennedy started his political career as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Massachusetts\u2019s 11th District voted him into the position in 1946 and he took office on January 3, 1947. He held his position in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/John-F-Kennedy\/Congressman-and-senator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House of Representatives until 1953, when he was elected as a United States Senator.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1960, Senator John F Kennedy began a presidential campaign against incumbent Richard Nixon. Kennedy narrowly defeated the Republican.<\/p>\n<p>During his life, John F Kennedy became famous for several things. Some of his achievements include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Becoming the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/01\/20\/biden-only-second-catholic-president-but-nearly-all-have-been-christians-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first Catholic president<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Winning a Pulitzer Prize for his book<em> Profiles in Courage.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/john-f-kennedy-receives-medals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">awards from the Navy and Marine Corps for heroism<\/a> during World War II.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Becoming the youngest <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">elected <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">president of the U.S.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Orchestrating financial reforms that helped pull the U.S. out of a recession.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Establishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/learn\/about-jfk\/jfk-in-history\/peace-corps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peace Corps<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Negotiating with Nikita Krushchev to avoid nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Signing several important acts into law, including the Equal Pay Act of 1963.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Laying groundwork for passage of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which became law shortly after his death.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Unfortunately, the thing that people know most about President John F Kennedy is that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/learn\/about-jfk\/jfk-in-history\/november-22-1963-death-of-the-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assassinated in Dallas<\/a> on Friday, November 22, 1963 at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">He was shot in the head while riding in an open-air car with his wife, Jacqueline \u201cJackie\u201d Kennedy Onassis. Although rush to a nearby hospital, he was announced dead on arrival.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">What Were John F Kennedy&#8217;s Last Words?<\/h2>\n<p>There are several stories about John F Kennedy\u2019s last words. Some say that his final statement was, \u201cMy God, I\u2019ve been hit.\u201d This is unlikely, though, given the extent of his injuries. It\u2019s much more likely that JFK\u2019s last words were uttered shortly before his assassination.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy was riding in the backseat with his wife. Texas First Lady Nellie Connally was sitting in the front. During the drive, before entering Dealey Plaza, she turned to Kennedy and said, \u201cMr. President, you can\u2019t say Dallas doesn\u2019t love you.\u201d Kennedy replied, \u201cNo, you certainly can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minutes later, multiple shots rang out. At least one struck and killed the president.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">How Old Was John F Kennedy When He Became President?<\/h2>\n<p>John F Kennedy is the youngest elected president in U.S. history. He was 43 years old when he took office. According to the U.S. Constitution, a person must be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/presidents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least 35 years old to become president<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although JFK is the youngest elected president, he is not the country\u2019s youngest president. That honor goes to then-Vice President Theodore Roosevelt, who became president at age 42 after the assassination of William McKinley.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">What Did John F Kennedy Accomplish?<\/h2>\n<p>John F Kennedy had a relatively short life, but it was filled with accomplishments. He was an excellent student who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1963\/11\/22\/jfk-graduated-cum-laude-1940-pbrave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graduated cum laude from Harvard University<\/a> with a Bachelor of Arts in government.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy was an extraordinary writer, and even considered a career as a journalist before deciding to enter politics. He was such a talented writer that he turned his senior thesis into a best-selling book titles <em>Why England Slept<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Other books written by Kennedy include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Profiles in Courage<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> (1956)<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>A Nation of Immigrants <\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">(1958)<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-style: normal;\">He also wrote the introduction to the 1960 Lorna Hahn book <em>North Africa: Nationalism to Nationhood.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Kennedy became increasingly convinced that he needed to enroll to fight in World War II. Although back problems prevented him from getting the position he initially wanted, he showed amazing courage and intelligence in battle. He won several modals during his military service, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Navy and Marine Corps Medal, the highest non-combat honor for heroism<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/purpleheartfoundation.org\/2020\/07\/15\/john-f-kennedy-purple-heart-recipient-father-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">A Purple Heart <\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">American Defense Service Medal<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">American Campaign Medal<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">World War II Victory Medal<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three service stars<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Not all of John F Kennedy\u2019s accomplish are easy to define because his early death prevented him from completing some of his plans. For instance, he had done a lot of preliminary work for advancing civil rights for women and Black Americans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">He was also instrumental in preventing a potential nuclear war. His attempt to invade Cuba via the Bay of Pigs failed, but his ongoing efforts resulted in a mostly peaceful resolution between the United States, Cuba, and the Soviet Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">It\u2019s uncertain whether Kennedy\u2019s continued aid to South Vietnam contributed to escalating tensions in Vietnam or would have helped avoid a conflict had he remained president.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">How Did John F Kennedy Motivate His Followers?<\/h2>\n<p>John F Kennedy was a passionate speaker who chose his words carefully. In one famous speech, he encouraged Americans to \u201cask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.\u201d In this speech, he was asking Americans to accept some sacrifices so they could contribute to the country\u2019s advancement.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"President John F. The president may have believed such harsh criticism would motivate workers.<\/p>\n<p>His harsh criticism may not have been strategic at all, though. It could have simply been impatience or poorly controlled anger. Some of his employees say that they found the \u201cdark side\u201d of the president demeaning and demotivating.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">John F Kennedy Leadership Style?<\/h2>\n<p>John F Kennedy used a variety of leadership styles throughout his career and presidency.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">JFK\u2019s Visionary Leadership Style<\/h3>\n<p>John F Kennedy was not satisfied with the status quo. He always wanted to push the country to improve itself. He often did this through a visionary leadership style that set high expectations and encouraged people to embrace his vision of the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>His promise to put Americans on the moon\u2019s surface stands out as a strong example of JFK\u2019s visionary leadership style<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At that point in the Space Race, few scientists believed that they could reach the moon within a few years. Despite this, Kennedy set the goal. By doing so, he reframed perspectives and motivated the country to reach beyond what it believed possible.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">JFK\u2019s Autocratic Leadership Style<\/h3>\n<p>Every successful president relies on a large group of advisors and aides to help them make decisions. Ultimately, though, the president must take responsibility. That doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that a U.S. president must accept an autocratic leadership style, but several have.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kennedy falls into this group of autocratic presidents.<\/strong> He wanted as much information as possible so he could make the right choices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When it came time to make a final decision, though, he demanded that people conform to his perspective<\/strong>. It wasn\u2019t up for debate. As president, he maintained control over the Executive Branch.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">JFK\u2019s Servant Leadership Style<\/h3>\n<p>Like most president\u2019s, JFK needed to present different sides of himself in private and in public.<\/p>\n<p>In private, he was a demanding person who put a lot of pressure on himself and others. Publicly, though, he presented himself as a humble, protective person who wanted to serve his fellow Americans.<\/p>\n<p>In truth, all of these leadership styles were probably earnest parts of Kennedy\u2019s personality. He was a complex person with challenging jobs. It makes sense that he would need to amplify certain aspects of his personality in different situations.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">What Type of Leader Was John F Kennedy?<\/h2>\n<p>John F Kennedy was a multifaceted leader who often had the ability to conform to a situation\u2019s demands. One might note that <strong>he spent much of his life suffering from severe back pain. Despite this, he could control his appearance and responses to present a healthy, optimistic face to the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was not always in control of his reactions, though. Many people who worked closely with the president say that he had a temper that could flare up without much warning. This suggests that he had an autocratic side.<\/p>\n<p>As an intelligent, very driven person, he may have found imperfections and complications difficult to tolerate.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">John F Kennedy Transformational Leadership<\/h2>\n<p>John F Kennedy used a transformational leadership style in public.<\/p>\n<p>He had big dreams for the United States, so he needed to inspire others to embrace a shared vision. He was largely, but not always, successful at guiding public opinions.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">John F Kennedy Democratic Leadership Style<\/h2>\n<p><strong>In some respects, you could say that John F Kennedy had a democratic leadership style because no single person could manage the Executive Branch of the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He had to rely on staff members to keep him informed of developments all over the world. The country was entering a period of intense transformation during his presidency, so it was probably difficult for him to determine which decisions were effective and ineffective.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Was John F Kennedy A Good President?<\/h2>\n<p>The answer to whether John F Kennedy was a good president depends on who you ask. In some ways, he was a terrific president who managed to steer the country through difficult times that included a recession and international strife. In other ways, though, he had several failures that could have influenced his reelection attempts.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly, plenty of Americans loved President Kennedy. Also, many thought that he was weak on communism and wanted to change social norms too rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, no one knows how the JFK administration would have changed the country and world.
